Heated pool in Saturnia: swim without the shivers

Saturnia is a small village in the Maremma, in southern Tuscany, known for its sulphur springs. The water gushes out at around 37 °C and stays at that temperature, a naturally heated pool that lets you bathe outdoors even when the air is cool. The selection includes the hotels that have their own thermal pools. I've selected 2 places, all rated at least 8/10; the top-rated is Hotel Saturno Fonte Pura (8.8/10).

The Oyster guide says the water keeps its natural temperature, so you can swim year-round. On HotelsCombined, one guest enjoyed this guests-only thermal pool; another mentions the smell of sulphur.

Guide's tip. Depending on the season, insects can be a nuisance by the pool: bring repellent.

The pool. Large outdoor pool of sulphurous thermal water, which gushes out at a constant 37.5 °C and naturally renews itself within a few hours.

A Stylist journalist who spent three days there describes water at 37.5 °C and a deeply relaxing swim. On Expedia, guests find the thermal pool fantastic; some warn that the smell of sulphur takes you by surprise when you arrive.

Guide's tip. Take off your jewellery before swimming: the sulphurous water can tarnish it.

How I check

The word "heated" on a booking page isn't enough. Every place must have a rating of at least 8/10 (or 4/5) and carries one of these four levels.

Confirmed by guests

Guests mention the heated water in their reviews, with the season when they say so.

Confirmed by a reviewer

A journalist or guide who stayed there describes the heated pool.

Advertised only

The hotel or the platform says so, but I haven't yet found a review that confirms it.

Indoor pool

Heating isn't specified, but the water is sheltered from the wind and cold air. Ask for the temperature before you book.

Places I left out

I left these out because guests report water colder than advertised, or because no heating or indoor pool is mentioned.
